Celebrating Women’s Achievements in Tanzania’s Financial Sector :Investing in Women for Affordable Housing

Insights from the Women in Affordable Housing Africa Webinar

Tanzania Association of Microfinance Institutions (TAMFI) actively participated in the Women in Affordable Housing Africa special webinar hosted by Union Housing Finance (AUHF) on March 27th, 2024, via Zoom.

The webinar, themed “Let’s Invest in Women and Promote Financial Inclusion Together,” featured esteemed speakers sharing their experiences and insights on advancing women’s participation in the housing sector.

Ms. May Elsayed, CEO of the Social Housing Mortgage Financing Fund (SHMFF) and Director of AUHF, highlighted the challenges faced by women in accessing affordable housing and emphasized the need for continued financial support, technical expertise, and government intervention to address these barriers effectively. She shared success stories from Egypt and Senegal, where initiatives aimed at providing affordable housing units for moderate-income women and families have made a significant impact on improving living conditions and empowering women.

Ms. Mildred Mutesa, Deputy Chairperson of AUHF and Managing Director of Zambia National Building, spoke passionately about overcoming self-doubt and empowering women to take charge of their housing decisions. She outlined practical steps for women to assert themselves in the housing sector, including seeking mentorship, speaking up, and staying focused on their goals. Ms. Mutesa emphasized the importance of confidence, resilience, and perseverance in overcoming challenges and achieving success in the male-dominated field of housing finance.

The webinar provided valuable insights and strategies for investing in women to drive change and promote affordable housing solutions across Africa.
