MEMBERS

A: General Members

  • Commercial Banks practising offering microfinance services
  • Regional Banks offering microfinance services
  • Non-Governmental Organizations engaged in the provision of Microfinance services as core activity
  • Companies offering microfinance services
  • Financial Cooperatives
  • Apex bodies representing informal financial service providers like VICOBA, COCOBA, and VSLAs
  • Community Based Organizations offering microfinance services as core activity
  • Whole Sale Microfinance organizations
  • Business Development Service Providers offering direct services to Microfinance Institutions as major clients.
  • Micro insurance providers , Brokers and agents

B: Associates Members

  • Professional Networks or Associations which have interest in Microfinance activities
  • Auditors, Accountants and consultants firms engaged in microfinance services;
  • Information Communication and Technology providers;
  • Other local and international Institutions or programs engaged in support of the microfinance industry

C: Honoraria Membership

Honoraria membership shall only apply for the purpose of honouring individuals who have exemplary contributed in the development and growth of the microfinance industry in the country. Only the Governing body (Board) shall execute such decisions.

BENEFITS OF BECOMING MEMBER

By becoming a member of TAMFI, member institutions are expected to gain the following benefits:

  1. To get an opportunity to collaborate and network with various local and international microfinance players.
  2. To get an opportunity to advertise through TAMFI website, newsletters, forums and through TAMFI international partners such as SEEP Network, AFRACA etc.
  3. To get an opportunity to receive capacity building skills trainings organized by TAMFI or TAMFI partners at a subsidized cost.
  4. To get an opportunity to receive both local and international technical support from TAMFI technical partners at a subsidized cost.
  5. To get an opportunity to participate in local and international events through TAMFI support.
  6. To get an opportunity of being assisted to raise resources through TAMFI channels.

. RIGHTS OF MEMBERS

The members of the company provided that continues to abide to the set terms and conditions of membership shall enjoy the following rights

  • To take part and participate in all activities of the company
  •  To receive the information initiated at the instances of the association and disseminated to its members
  • To attend at all meetings, conferences, workshops, forums, regional and national summits or other functions organized and sponsored by the association.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF MEMBERS

The members of the Association shall have the following duties and responsibilities:-

  1. To uphold the organization’s constitution, regulations, rules and other lawfully issued guidelines
  2. To pay fees and subscription when due so as to enable the association implements the planned activities as per approved fee structure by the members annual general meeting.
  3. To participate in the TAMFI activities
  4. To abide to the governing laws, regulations and other guidelines of the country

TAMFI has been registered as a Company Limited by Guarantee

12. GOVERNANCE

TAMFI is designed to have in place sound governance structures and systems that allows the association to execute its services successfully. Among the Governance structures and systems in place include:

  • Having an inclusive board as a governing council reporting to the Annual Members General Meeting
  • Having a Secretariat which runs the day to activities of the Association – the secretariat is lead by the CEO.
  • Having task oriented committees system to carry out special tasks
  • Have in place policies and procedures, strategic plan, operations plans and budgets to guide Association operations and decisions
  • Have monthly board meetings
  • Have system of periodic review and assessment

MEETINGS

  1. TAMFI in each year will hold a general meeting as its annual general meeting in addition to any other meetings in that year, and shall specify the meeting as such in the notices calling it; and not more than fifteen months elapse between the date of the annual general meeting of the Company and that of the next. The Annual General Meeting is the highest and most authoritative sitting of the organization.
  2. All general meetings other than annual general meetings are called extraordinary general meetings.

REGIONS AND DISTRICTS COVERAGE

TAMFI being a National Network is keen to be active in all and Regions and districts of Tanzania. This will be achieved by a strategy to establish TAMFI representative’s role and leaders for Regions and districts.

The new TAMFI will be nationally active through Regions/District TAMFI Committees.  TAMFI Regions/Districts Committees will initially operate their affairs on meeting basis rather than having permanent offices. The Secretary of the District TAMFI will be the CEO of Representative Organization.   The district representative organization will be annually nominated by TAMFI member’s annual general meeting (criteria will be established for nominating representative organizations).  

BOARD STRUCTURE AND REPRESENTATION

Subject to any resolution reached by the members during the general meeting or any applicable law or regulations, each of the following member clusters will be entitled to representation in the Board of the Association as follows:-

  1. Banks and Financial Institutions
    1. Companies offering microfinance services
    2. Non-Governmental Organizations engaged in microfinance as core activity. This category shall have two seats in the Board
    3. Financial Cooperatives
    4. Apex bodies representing informal financial service providers like VICOBA, COCOBA, VSLAs
    5. Zanzibar representation (if not taken care of by other category)

Business Development and Service Providers

PROCEDURE TO JOIN MEMBERSHIP

No institution shall be admitted as members of the organization unless approved by the Governing Council, provided that such approval shall not be unreasonably withheld.  Any institution that wishes to become a member shall deliver an application letter/email detailing its practice in the microfinance industry or interest in support of the sector and experience in conducting or working in microfinance industry in the country.  After receiving the intention to join membership the Governing Council will inform the applicant.  If successful, membership application form will be issued to be completed by the applicant and submitted for further actions.

Platform for all microfinance stakeholders

Tanzania Association of Micro finance Institutions (TAMFI) is a not-for-profit umbrella organization for micro finance institutions in Tanzania. It was formally registered in 2001 as a sole network for micro finance activities in the country. Members include Commercial, Community and Microfinance Banks, NGOs, Private MFIs, SACCOS, apex of informal groups, micro -insurance company and Business Service Providers. The association seeks to develop capability of micro finance institutions and the micro finance sector in general through advocacy, lobbying, research and development, responsible micro finance, capacity building, and information gathering and dissemination. The National Micro finance Policy also assigns the task of developing and ensuring application of standards to the network.
