A Bright Future Awaits Zanzibar’s Communities as they look forward towards adoption of solar energy

As we step towards the end of November, let’s celebrate the remarkable progress and opportunities that TAMFI is reaching under the support of C.S MOTT Foundation. The Association’s renewable energy initiatives crossed the ocean in bringing the technology to the spectacular and historic communities of Zanzibar. Our October outreach program was more than just an official visit; it was a combination towards empowerment, sustainability, and innovation to Zanzibar’s communities. Here’s a glimpse at our impactful experience.

Spotlight: Tufahamiane Group – Harvesting Hope and Energy

In the heart of Kizimkazi, the Tufahamiane Group, with its 32 dedicated members (mostly women), is a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives. Specializing in organic-driven horticulture and spice farming, their gardens flourish, an impression of hard work and determination. However, the journey is not without challenges. Water access and irrigation limitations often slow progress. Members of the Tufahamiane group have an interest to adopt the use of solar powered irrigation systems that will change the landscape and increase productivity. During the community awareness creation, TAMFI shared more insights about solar-powered water pumps and lighting solutions, highlighting how these can revolutionize agricultural productivity.

Kalibara Women’s Group – Illuminating Enterprises

In the vibrant Kalibara community, 15 entrepreneurial women are making strides in soap-making and horticulture. With a modest capital of TZS 1.6 million, their spirit is strong, but reliable energy solutions are crucial for expansion. Introducing renewable energy financing options, TAMFI demonstrated how solar-powered tools, especially lighting and pumps, can elevate their production capacity and profits. Reliable energy means more products, more income, and a brighter future.

Collaborating with Local Councils for Community Growth

At the South District Council, the response was clear: local leaders are eager to collaborate on renewable energy solutions. They envision solar pumps transforming water access for last mile communities. The council’s enthusiasm signals a pivotal shift towards sustainability and the potential aspects that solar energy holds. This is a call to all like-minded organizations and strategic partners to support our cause which is to bridge the gap. Join TAMFI’s mission to promote solar technology, aiming at making it accessible to the last mile communities in Zanzibar.

Learning from Success: Josam Home Garden

Success stories inspire progress. At Josam Home Garden, solar-powered drip irrigation has turned a local farm into a thriving business supplying tourist hotels with fresh herbs and green products. This model demonstrates that sustainable practices are profitable and scalable. Josam’s plan to become a demonstration site offers invaluable learning opportunities for aspiring farmers. With TAMFI’s support, the aim is to document more success stories like this and share with the community at large.

Renewable energy is not just about technology; it’s about people, communities, and dreams. Overall, we aspire to make solar energy accessible to every farmer, entrepreneur, and household.
