Pan African Women’s Day: Celebrating Women’s Leadership in Financial Inclusion and Economic Transformation

July 31, 2026 · Cielo Mulabwa@gmail.com

Every year on 31 July, Africa commemorates Pan African Women’s Day (PAWO Day)—a day that honours the remarkable contributions of African women to the continent’s liberation, development, peace, and prosperity. Established in 1962 following the founding of the Pan-African Women’s Organization (PAWO), this day serves as a reminder of the progress made toward gender equality while reaffirming the commitment to address the challenges that continue to hinder women’s full participation in economic and social development.

This year’s celebration provides an opportunity to recognize the indispensable role women play in advancing financial inclusion and building resilient communities across Tanzania and the African continent.

Women at the Heart of Financial Inclusion

Women are the backbone of Africa’s informal economy and constitute a significant proportion of microfinance clients. Across Tanzania, women operate micro and small enterprises, engage in agriculture, participate in Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), SACCOs, and community groups, and provide essential services that sustain households and local economies.

Despite these contributions, many women continue to face barriers in accessing formal financial services. Limited collateral, inadequate financial literacy, restrictive social norms, and limited access to affordable credit continue to constrain the growth of women-owned businesses.

Microfinance institutions have emerged as a powerful bridge, enabling women to access financial services tailored to their needs. Through savings, credit, insurance, digital financial services, and financial education, women are increasingly able to invest in businesses, improve household welfare, educate their children, and build resilience against economic shocks.

TAMFI’s Commitment to Women’s Economic Empowerment

As the umbrella body for microfinance institutions in Tanzania, the Tanzania Association of Microfinance Institutions (TAMFI) remains committed to promoting an inclusive and sustainable microfinance sector that empowers women economically.

TAMFI works closely with its members and development partners to strengthen institutional capacity, improve responsible finance practices, enhance financial literacy, and promote innovative financial products that respond to the diverse needs of women entrepreneurs in businesses, agriculture, housing, renewable energy, education and health.

Women have been among the primary beneficiaries, reducing the time spent collecting water, improving family health, and creating opportunities for income-generating activities.

When women gain access to finance, the benefits extend beyond individual households. Families become healthier, children remain in school, businesses grow, and communities become more resilient.

Investing in Women is Investing in Africa’s Future

Research consistently demonstrates that empowering women economically leads to stronger and more inclusive economic growth. Financial inclusion not only increases household incomes but also promotes better health, education, food security, and community well-being.

As Africa continues its journey toward the aspirations of Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals, expanding women’s access to quality financial services remains a strategic priority. Financial institutions have an important responsibility to design products that are affordable, accessible, and responsive to the unique needs of women across rural and urban communities.

A Call to Action

On this Pan African Women’s Day, TAMFI calls upon member financial institutions, policymakers, development partners, and all stakeholders to strengthen collaborative efforts that expand women’s access to finance, entrepreneurship opportunities, financial education, and leadership.

Together, let us continue building a financial ecosystem where every woman has the opportunity to realise her potential, contribute meaningfully to economic development, and inspire future generations.

Happy Pan African Women’s Day!

“When African women thrive, families prosper, businesses flourish, communities become stronger, and nations grow. Empowering women through inclusive finance is not only a matter of equality—it is an investment in Africa’s sustainable future.”
