Peter Mushi: “If you have a job that does not pay your worth, just quit and start your own business”

June 22, 2021 · Tamfi Updates

Peter Mushi is among the 24 outstanding entrepreneurs shortlisted for the 4th Citi Micro-entrepreneurship Awards(CMA) in Tanzania

Business: Mini Supermarket

Financier: HP Microfinance

Location: Chamanzi, Dar es salaam

If you have a job that does not pay your worth, just quit and start your own business. For Peter, that is what he did, and it has worked.

He says he was earning a meagre salary that could not meet his needs. Knowing very well that entrepreneurship is not a child’s play, and one must have a solid mind to make it, it was the best choice.

“I started with a capital of Tshs 1.5 Million. HP Microfinance loaned me for the first time about Tshs 500,000. Later on, another 1 million, which went a long way to boost my business,” he says.

Challenges: Some of the biggest challenges in running a supermarket include shoplifting, expiry of goods while in stock, high taxes and rent.

Vision: He plans to expand the business to another location, open up a studio shop and purchase a plot.

Impact: The business helps Peter to provide for his family. He says he has an immensely improved economic situation compared to when he was not doing business.

Opinion: Mr Peter understands the value of every shilling he earns and tries to use his finances wisely.
