Tanzania Bankers Association (TBA) at 30: Celebrating Three Decades of Success, Growth and Inclusive Finance in Tanzania

September 30, 2026 · TAMFI Communications

The Tanzania Association of Microfinance Institutions (TAMFI) was honored to participate in the Tanzania Bankers Association’s (TBA’s) 30th Anniversary celebration, marking three decades of remarkable achievements in fostering growth, prosperity and inclusive finance and banking in Tanzania.

TBA marked the occasion by holding several events including the Research and Financial Inclusion Conference 2026, held under the theme “Transforming MSME Financing for Sustainable Development: Policy Reforms, Innovation and Opportunities.”

The conference provided a valuable opportunity for dialogue on the role of research, innovation, and collaboration in expanding access to financial services. Discussions emphasized the importance of data-driven decision-making in designing inclusive financial products and strengthening the overall financial ecosystem. Stakeholders highlighted how research and insights are increasingly guiding financial institutions to better understand underserved populations and tailor solutions that respond to their needs.

Key message across the conference was the continued progress of financial inclusion in Tanzania. According to national data, access to formal financial services has significantly improved, supported by digital financial services and collaborative efforts between public and private sector players. However, gaps remain, particularly among rural populations, women, and youth, underscoring the need for continued innovation and targeted interventions.

The conference also underscored the growing role of partnerships in advancing financial inclusion. Institutions are increasingly working together to build financial infrastructure, enhance regulatory frameworks, and promote sustainable financial solutions. This aligns with broader sector efforts to strengthen inclusive finance through research, policy engagement, and market-driven innovations that create lasting impact.

It was clearly noted and emphasized that MSME financing has been integrated into the Tanzania Development Vision 2050, with the banking sector playing a pivotal role in supporting the National Vision. A strong appeal was made to banks to adopt alternative credit scoring models based on cash flows and trade histories, rather than relying strictly on physical property as collateral. On policy reforms and guarantees, discussions focused on strengthening public-private partnerships and expanding credit guarantee schemes to cover volatile sectors such as agriculture and mining. Finally, emphasis was placed on digital financial literacy and financial education as a whole as an integral pillar of the financial ecosystem.

TAMFI’s participation reinforced its commitment to engaging with key stakeholders in the financial sector and contributing to discussions that shape the future of microfinance in Tanzania. The insights gained from the conference are particularly relevant to TAMFI members, especially in areas such as product development, digital transformation, and evidence-based decision-making.

Moving forward, TAMFI will continue to support its members by sharing knowledge, promoting best practices, and advocating for policies that enhance financial inclusion and sustainability within the microfinance sector.

Conclusion

The TBA Research & Financial Inclusion Conference 2026 reaffirmed the importance of collaboration, research, and innovation in achieving inclusive financial growth. For TAMFI, the event served as a strategic platform to strengthen partnerships and align its mission with national and global efforts to expand access to financial services for all.

We Congratulate TBA for this significant milestone and for its outstanding leadership in strengthening the financial sector!

Long live TBA!
